Ascension St. John Children’s Hospital is opening the Shery L. Cotton Pediatric Emergency Department. The level II pediatric ED, which is separate and distinct from the level I adult/trauma emergency center at Ascension St. John Hospital, has its own entrance, waiting room and treatment areas.
Why it matters: The pediatric ED will enhance privacy, comfort and wait times for young patients and their families.
Features include:
- A dedicated ambulance entrance and trauma rooms specifically designed for children.
- 13 exam rooms, including three child/adolescent behavioral health rooms, one sensory exam room and two procedure rooms.
- Board-certified pediatric emergency specialists and specially trained nurses, available 24/7.
- New, state-of-the-art equipment.
The pediatric ED was supported by a gift from Shery L. Cotton and her son, Jon B. Cotton. Their gift and others helped the Your Child, We Care campaign meet its financial goal to enhance Ascension St. John Children’s Hospital through a four-phase construction plan.
“We’re excited to open our dedicated pediatric emergency department,” said Kevin Grady, MD, Regional President & CEO, Metro East Region, Ascension Michigan. “We are truly grateful for the Cottons’ gift, and the generosity of many others, which will allow us to care for our youngest patients in the best possible care environment and make a positive impact on the health of our community.”
The Shery L. Cotton Pediatric ED completes the first phase of the multimillion-dollar expansion and renovation of pediatric services. Phase 2 construction, expected to begin in January 2024, will create a dedicated Women’s and Children’s Entrance to Ascension St. John Hospital. Phases 3 and 4 will renovate the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Inpatient Unit.
