Liz Popwell, Chief Strategy Officer, Ascension Michigan, talks about leadership, strategy and motivation in a recent podcast at Becker Hospital Review.
“Respect is earned, it’s not given,” Liz says during the podcast. “A lot of leaders who are very authentic and who have been most successful really understand that it’s all about relationships.” She adds that successful leaders need to be adept at self-reflection and open to feedback.
About leading healthcare strategy, Lis says it’s important for her function to help leaders establish a long-term strategic direction.
“It sets forth a vision and an aspiration for where you want to go as an organization,” she says. “Today healthcare is so different than it used to be. There are so many transformation issues. There are so many competitors out there now. … No longer in healthcare strategy are we worried so much about traditional providers; we’re worried about a much broader spectrum from a strategic perspective.”
Liz says being flexible is key to successful strategy.
“You also have to be nimble enough to understand how you might need to shift your thinking as it relates to … disrupters,” she says.
During the podcast, Liz also talks about how Ascension’s Dual Transformation keeps her motivated, and the importance of mentorship in developing future leaders.
