Kids at Dell Children’s get costumes for Halloween

Last week, pediatric patients at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, part of Ascension Texas, received costumes in time for Halloween. The event was part of a program created by Spirit Halloween, a costume shop that over several years has provided free costumes and raised nearly $640,000 for Dell Children’s.

Child Life Specialist Laura Wilson said this type of activity can help patients feel more comfortable.

“They love to come and choose the costumes themselves. Getting that choice and control back in the hospital is really important for them and then just to be able to be a kid still,” she said.

On Oct. 31, the children will have a Halloween parade, and candy will be delivered to patients for whom it’s appropriate but who can’t leave their room.
