Chris Uggen, MD, a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at Ascension Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, part of Ascension Michigan, recently reflected on the death of professional basketball player Kobe Bryant and his work with Bryant as part of the Los Angeles Lakers medical staff during the 2007-2008 season. Dr. Uggen was completing a sports medicine fellowship at the time.
Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven other people died in a helicopter crash in California on Jan. 26.
“It came as quite a shock yesterday to see him pass away,” Dr. Uggen told WMMT in West Michigan. “Because he was really a tremendous competitor. I worked closely with him in the locker room … He was one of the hardest workers there of any athlete I've ever worked with.
