Ascension St. Vincent marks 800th kidney transplant

Ascension St. Vincent Hospital - Indianapolis recently performed its 800th kidney transplant, marking a significant milestone for the hospital and a second chance at life for a local man.

Adrian Butler was diagnosed with kidney disease in his 20s and by age 33 needed a transplant. After searching for a donor match through family and friends, his wife turned to social media looking for a donor, as noted by WRTV.

Tiffanie Stall, a former friend and high school classmate of Adrian’s, heard the call for help.

"It kind of just weighed on me for a couple days, really heavy. It was just one of those things like I have to call," Tiffanie told WRTV. "Like if it was my brother I would do anything in the world, so I called.”

She was a match and donated one of her kidneys to Adrian.

According to Alex Cantafio, MD, a transplant surgeon at Ascension St. Vincent, there is always a need for organs.

"We add someone to the list every 10 seconds. It's just such a huge need and we just don't have enough organs to go around," Dr. Cantafio told WRTV. “Living donation is the linchpin that helps combat our disparity of availability of organs.”
