Ascension St. Vincent marks 800th kidney transplant

Ascension St. Vincent Hospital - Indianapolis recently performed its 800th kidney transplant, marking a significant milestone for the hospital and a second chance at life for a local man.

Adrian Butler was diagnosed with kidney disease in his 20s and by age 33 needed a transplant. After searching for a donor match through family and friends, his wife turned to social media looking for a donor, as noted by WRTV.

Tiffanie Stall, a former friend and high school classmate of Adrian’s, heard the call for help.

"It kind of just weighed on me for a couple days, really heavy. It was just one of those things like I have to call," Tiffanie told WRTV. "Like if it was my brother I would do anything in the world, so I called.”

She was a match and donated one of her kidneys to Adrian.

According to Alex Cantafio, MD, a transplant surgeon at Ascension St. Vincent, there is always a need for organs.

"We add someone to the list every 10 seconds. It's just such a huge need and we just don't have enough organs to go around," Dr. Cantafio told WRTV. “Living donation is the linchpin that helps combat our disparity of availability of organs.”

This story was also covered by WISH-TV 8 and featured Abdul Moiz, MD, Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Ascension St. Vincent.
