Thanks to the dedication of people throughout the Ascension Gulf Coast Ministry Market, the lives of severely impoverished Haitian children are being saved. In the past year, 10,000 children who otherwise would have no resources or access to care have received treatment at the Danita’s Children Medical Center in Ouanaminthe, Haiti.
The hospital is part of Danita’s Children, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that rescues, loves and cares for orphaned and impoverished children in Haiti. Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama, in the Ascension Gulf Coast Ministry Market, has provided financial and staff support to the hospital over the past several years. The organization is governed by a board of directors and is managed by a CEO, executive director and an 80-plus-member staff. Its stateside offices are in Nashville, Tennessee. Peter J. Lindquist, Vice President of Clinical Operations and Chief Nursing Officer of Saint Thomas Midtown and Saint Thomas West hospitals, in the Ascension Tennessee Ministry Market, serves on the eight-person board. The 50-bed hospital provides inpatient and outpatient services and is equipped with an emergency department, a primary care clinic, radiology, pharmacy and lab. Future plans include the addition of a surgery suite. Much of the focus of the hospital’s work is on treating and preventing malnutrition through clinical services and community education. Malnutrition is rampant across the country.
“Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this hospital up and running,” Peter said. “There’s so much work that needs to be done, but this partnership is amazing. Together, we’ve taken care of almost 10,000 children who would not have been able to get care anywhere else in this country.”
