Ascension Lourdes in Binghamton, New York, hosted a Young Heroes Family Fun Fair for families to have fun together and to familiarize kids with doctors and nurses so they aren’t afraid to visit the doctor. Kids met police officers and firefighters, who explained to them what they do to protect local families. Lourdes staff also showed parents and kids how to make healthy meals, try healthy foods. and connect to healthcare services and financial assistance if they need it.
“Healthcare is moving toward prevention. If you’re going to prevent illness it’s got to start with kids,” said Matthew Moore, Lourdes Health Coach. “One of the main themes we’re pushing is empowerment, to teach kids that you get to make your own decisions when it comes to health.”
Activities included music, dancing, contests, games, prizes and giveaways, ice cream, and a free farmers market, along with blood pressure and prediabetes screenings. Also on hand was Rowdy the Rumble Pony, the official mascot of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the AA minor league baseball affiliate of the New York Mets.
