Dr. Richard Fogel named Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, Ascension

Richard Fogel, MD, FACC, FHRS, has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for Ascension and a member of the Ascension Leadership Team, reporting to Joseph R. Impicciche, JD, MHA, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Fogel has served as Chief Clinical Officer for Clinical & Network Services, Ascension, since 2019, with responsibility for clinical performance across the national health ministry. In addition to championing quality and safety improvements and practices, he has overseen the design of flexible physician alignment strategies and service lines, and the development of an Ascension-wide clinical research infrastructure.

Dr. Fogel has led Ascension’s clinical response throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, working with clinical and operational leaders across the ministry to guide the development of clinical protocols and processes.

“Dr. Fogel’s vast clinical and operational experience and his deep commitment to our Mission of providing compassionate, personalized care to all, especially those who need it most, make him an exceptional addition to the Ascension Leadership Team,” said Joe.

A practicing staff cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Dr. Fogel also has served as Chief Clinical Officer for Ascension Indiana. He has a long history of leadership in Indiana and has also led numerous Ascension committees, including as Chair of the Ascension Clinical Integration Committee and a member of the Ascension Clinical Leadership Committee and the Clinical Informatics and Analytics Committee. From 2010-2016, he was the Chair of the Ascension Electrophysiology Affinity Group. He also is past Chief Executive Officer of St. Vincent Medical Group in Indiana and former Chair of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer at St. Vincent.

Dr. Fogel earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Boston University Medical Center. He completed his two-year electrophysiology fellowship at Boston University Medical Center and Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. He is a member of the Ascension Leadership Academy and a graduate of the Executive Ministry Leadership formation program.

Dr. Joseph Cacchione leaving Ascension

Joseph Cacchione, MD, FACC, Executive Vice President, Clinical & Network Services, will be leaving Ascension to lead Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health in Philadelphia.

Dr. Cacchione joined Ascension in 2017 to lead Ascension Medical Group and the next year added oversight of Ascension Michigan. He was instrumental in the work of AMG and Ascension Michigan to develop a culture of high performance. In 2019, Dr. Cacchione took on his current role of Executive Vice President, Clinical & Network Services.

Dr. Cacchione has been a key driver of transformational change, helping to position Ascension for the future so we can proactively address the holistic needs of those we serve. Many of the innovations that he championed – such as expansion of virtual care capabilities and coordinated approaches to infection prevention and other clinical protocols – proved vitally important as he and other members of our leadership team guided our ministry through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and our ongoing recovery phase.

Earlier this year Dr. Cacchione agreed to return to Ascension Michigan as interim Ministry Market Executive to help guide its leaders, associates and clinicians as they work to adapt to the changing healthcare industry across the state. Jonathan Nalli will now assume responsibilities as interim Ministry Market Executive for Ascension Michigan while continuing to lead Ascension Indiana. Jonathan has been with Ascension St. Vincent since 2014 and is a graduate of the Ascension Leadership Academy. Ascension St. Vincent is a leader in cardiovascular, women's health, pediatrics, neurosciences, cancer care, orthopedics and trauma care and is one of the largest employers in central and southern Indiana. A search is under way to identify a new leader for Ascension Michigan.
