Julia Means, RN, Parish and Community Health Nurse for Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s, part of Ascension Wisconsin, has been appointed to the City of Milwaukee’s newly created Board of Health.
Julia and eight other community leaders will advise the city’s health department on policies and practices to improve health outcomes for Milwaukee residents.
“The individuals appointed to the Board of Health bring experience and understanding of the array of public health issues facing Milwaukee,” says Tom Barrett, Milwaukee Mayor. “Together, their energy and expertise will set the direction for the health department and make sure we are supporting great health outcomes for every Milwaukee resident.”
In 2018, Julia was honored with the Ascension Living the Mission & Values Award for her dedication and commitment. She helped establish the first diabetic-friendly food pantry in the Milwaukee area, now one of the services offered through Ascension Ebenezer Health Resource Center, a collaboration of Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s and community stakeholders. She leads Be of Good Heart, a robust diabetes and hypertension screening program, in partnership with 90 churches. She coordinates Blanket of Love, an educational program for expectant mothers and their families, and – to help make Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s a leader in efforts to reduce infant mortality in Milwaukee – collaborates in a Strong Baby program to promote healthy births and healthy babies.
